Meet James McKie
CEO & Lead Coach
I’ve spent the last decade learning everything I can about training—from university study and professional sport to in-the-trenches experience.
My motivation for building this programme comes from a desire to help people achieve something difficult and meaningful.
Since taking over Riverside Gym in 2017, the most recurring lesson I take from our members is how much better their daily lives feel when they are on target with their work inside the gym.

Maximising that feeling for people by breaking down the typical barriers of training in a gym, providing structure and expertise, is at the core of what we do, every day .

At Riverside Gym, we operate in defiance of the typical commercial gym model. Instead of profiting from people who never show up, we run a results-focused system where every member receives a personalised programme, coaching, feedback, and real accountability.
Now, we’ve brought that proven system online.
By joining our online training app, you can work with us remotely, in your own gym, in your own language, and at a fraction of the cost of personal training.

You may wonder why a British coach offers this in Cantonese. For me, the answer is simple. If you can integrate what you love into your business, passion meets strategy—and good things happen. My wife is from Hong Kong, and together we share a deep fondness for the city, the language, and the culture. This project is a reflection of that reality together with our UK operation.

When you join, you’ll receive a personalised gym programme every 4 weeks, adapted to your goals, experience, schedule, and—most importantly—how you're actually responding to training. You’ll have direct contact with coaches, the ability to submit videos for review, and regular updates to keep you moving forward.

The gym should be a source of positivity and progression, not stress, ambiguity, injury, or wasted effort. In today’s fitness industry, flooded with AI, influencers, and information overload—I believe real coaching, expertise and genuine connection matter more than ever. This programme aims to prove that.
-
Do I need access to a gym for online workout coaching?Yes, our programmes have been adapted to suit a basic commercial gym format, without taking up a lot of space or needing complex equipment. For strength work, you will need a squat rack, plates, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, a pull-up bar and a few cable machines. For cardiovascular work, an air bike, rowing machine or ski-erg, a gym bike and a treadmill or outdoor space if using a running programme.
-
What experience level is this online fitness coaching suitable for?We have programmes for complete beginners through to advanced trainees. Most clients start at a foundation or novice level, but those with more experience can jump into an advanced programme. Our onboarding process ensures you are placed exactly where you need to be.
-
How personalised is the programme from my personal trainer?Training is individually assigned based on your needs, from a large library of our programmes. This allows us to keep costs low, while providing real value from proven systems of training. These are assigned based on your specific goal, training experience, and most importantly, how you are responding to the programme. Every 4 weeks, we assess how you are changing, and assign the best format to fit your goals, time commitment and individual strengths and weaknesses. This process is how we make sure you are getting the right training. No one is left with a rigid programme that isn't working for them.
-
What style of training do you teach? We believe in a balanced profile of strength and fitness. There are pathways which are split evenly in these domains, others which are more strength focused or more fitness focused. These are flexible, and everyone's focus shifts over time, but regardless of the programme, there is always an undertone of moving well, building muscle mass and developing aerobic fitness.
-
How many days per week do I need to train with my online fitness plan?Your time commitment to a specific programme will change depending on how advanced the programme is. Generally, an entry level programme will be 2-3 days per week, and the top end, more advanced programmes are 5-days per week, a blend of strength and cardiovascular work.
-
How much support is available from my remote personal trainer? You can message James and his coaching staff directly through the app inbox. You can ask questions about your programme, provide video footage of your technique for review, or just let us know how you are doing. We schedule contact automatically each month and generally reach out to anyone who falls behind.
-
What happens if I fall behind on the schedule? If this is a short term issue, programmes can be paused and re-arranged in your weekly calendar. If this more of a repetitive issue, you can communicate with us, and we will help you find a way to organise training more suitably or offer advice on how to confront the cause directly.
-
What language is the training programme delivered in?You will see both English and Traditional Chinese on your programme. Communications can be in either language, with Chinese having a slightly longer response time.
